Strong Groupsigns

Groupsigns stand for letter combinations that appear inside words. One cell can represent “ch,” “sh,” “th,” “wh,” “er,” or “ing” — wherever those letters occur.

So “the” uses a contraction, and “this” uses the “th” groupsign followed by i and s.
